How to remove the WordPress Page Title but keep it in the WordPress Menu
We have received a few requests here at Artbiz.ca, on how to prevent the page title from appearing on the Home page. Removing the page title would be done purely for aesthetic reasons; some artists just don’t like “Home” or “Welcome” appearing on the page.
Some might suggest that this is not good SEO (search engine optimization) practice but I submit; as long as you fill in the SEO form available under each and every page of your Artbiz site that it is perfectly acceptable to remove the WordPress Page Title.
A word of caution
DO NOT do this for every page of your site. One page fine; you can make up for it with your SEO but if you do it for every page you will not be able to identify which page is which in the list of pages because everyone will be listed with (no title). There will be site wide SEO consequences as well.
If you want the page title removed and still maintain good SEO then ask your theme developer to create a new selector for your “page” (not posts) titles with display:none. This will maintain the page title in the source code for search engines to read.
There may be a fee involved to have this change made to the theme files but it would be a small price to pay when you think of the consequences of mucking around with your SEO.
Okay, that said:
To remove the WordPress page title but still have it appear in the menu follow these steps:
Step One – Open the page for editing
- Open the page you want to remove the title from in the page editor.
- Simply delete the title from the page title box.
- Update your page.
Step Two – Remove the item from your menu
- Navigate to Appearance > Menus and select your menu.
- Click on the arrow on the right of the menu item to expand the dialogue box.
- Click the “Remove” link
Step Three – Adding the link back into the Manu
- On Custom Links type or copy and paste the URL of your site eg: http://artbiz.ca
- Type in a label for the menu link. The label will only appear in the menu.
- Click the “Add to Menu” button
The new Custom Link will appear at the bottom of the menu.
Drag and drop into the position you want.
Save your menu
What the home page looks like now
You can remove the WordPress Page Title quite easily by following these steps but I do not recommend that you remove all your page titles, after all, your visitors do need to know where they are.
